Mike Flint, known in Bathurst, Eastern Cape, as a charismatic restaurateur/entrepreneur, was in fact Gary Pyatt—a British fugitive who had evaded justice for over two decades. Pyatt was convicted in the UK in 1998 for fraudulently marketing “Eric Cantona” wine and brandy without authorization from the footballer or Manchester United. Sentenced to six years in prison, he fled to South Africa before serving his term.

The first church in Bathurst was established in 1832, formerly called the Wesleyan Chapel. Now referred to as the Bathurst Methodist church, it deservedly achieved national monument status in 1989. The church celebrates its 190th anniversary in 2022.  The Wesleyan Chapel was built by Samuel Bradshaw, who also built the wool mill and the Anglican Church.
