Meet the Bathurst Riding Community

At the centre of equestrian life in Bathurst is the Bathurst Riding Club — a welcoming, community-based riding club that hosts a variety of outings and horse-related activities throughout the year. Members and visitors alike enjoy spirited outrides through the village and surrounding countryside, social gatherings, and opportunities to connect with fellow riders.

Riding Events & Shows

Bathurst’s thorough connection with equestrian sport is best showcased through its riding events. One of the highlights each year is the Bathurst Horse Show, where riders from across the region come together to compete in showjumping, dressage, and other classes under the auspices of South African equestrian bodies.

In addition to formal competitions, the riding club and community organise group outrides and fun social rides — a great way for riders of all levels to enjoy the local landscape and meet others who share their passion for horses.

Community & Commonage Trails

Beyond organised events, Bathurst’s rural setting makes it ideal for trail riding. Much of the local Bathurst commonage, a vast communal land area surrounding the village, is used for recreational activities including horse riding. These open spaces let riders experience scenic rural terrain on horseback at their own pace.

Planning Your Ride

  • Skill Levels: Riding opportunities here are best suited for those who bring their own horse or are already involved in the local equestrian community — visitors new to riding should connect with the Bathurst Riding Club ahead of time.

  • Events Calendar: Equestrian events are typically scheduled throughout the year, with various shows and club outings advertised on local community calendars and social media.

  • Experience the Scenery: The countryside around Bathurst is as much a star of the show as the horses themselves — rolling farmland, historic ruins and quiet backroads make for memorable rides.
